any book by john grisham (EXCEPT king of torts and street lawyer - everything else is awesome)
jean auel wrote a series called "earth's children". the first book is called "the clan of the cave bear". it is about a little cro magnon girl who loses her mother in an earthquake and is adopted into a neaderthal clan. i know - it sounds weird, but it is REALLY awesome.
if you like the fantasy genre, elizabeth moon wrote a very good trilogy called "the deed of paksenarrion". it is about a farm girl who leaves the farm to join the military. it is very well written, and you can tell that the author spent time in the miltary herself.
if detective stories are your thing, sue grafton writes the alphabet series (A is for alibi, B is for burglar, etc.). the private investigator is a quirky female, but the character is older than you are, so you may not relate as well with her (the character is in her mid-30's and the time is in the 80's)
i am currently reading a historical fiction novel called "labyrinth". its about the albagenise (sp) crusade. very different.... alittle history, a little time travel, a little fantasy, a little suspense. so far - a great read.
hope that helps

Old? As in classics like Crime and Punishment? Anything by Jane Austen. Or as in not recent? Like "My Sister's Keeper"? Or Wicked by Gregory Macguire. The Lovely Bones is also a good read. Hope this helps.

Try the Janet Evanovich books featuring Stephanie Plum, female bounty hunter. They are full of wild characters and will make you laugh out loud. They also have good storylines, romance, adventure, and are real page turners. Best of all, there are twelve of them out now, so you won't run out of reading material any time soon. The first is called "One for The Money".

Try Jane Austen books: they're the chick lit reads of centuries ago. Memoirs of a Geisha, though more "new," is also a wonderful read. Ernest Hemingway novels are also a fast read.
