Why did the September 11 highjackers attack us?

When it happened, Bush said "They hate us for our freedom." At the time, we were all pulling together and being patriotic and we weren't big on asking questions, but years later the idea that they were just sitting at home reading newspapers or watching TV and saw us and said "Look at them with their democratically elected official and their freedom of speech and their half dressed women! It makes me so mad I willing to leave my family and sacrifice my life so that thousands of them will die just to teach them to not be so free," seems like a silly way to explain their motivations. So I want to know, does anyone know why they did it?

The terrorist elements in the middle east are in a fight to take over the region. One thing that stands in their way is several of the governments over there are aligned with the US. They had taken over Afghanistan and are actively trying to overthrow many of the other states. With the US in the region they know that they cannot make an armed effort because we will step in with our allies and wipe out any force they can muster.

Their solution to us was a terror campaign. Lebanon, the Cole, bombings of our embassies, were all attempts to make being in the region too hard and for us to leave. These are the attacks you heard of. They also have waged a terror campaign on any Arab that might not sympathize with them, these are the ones you generally don't hear about.

The Sept 11th attacks were meant to break our will and make us leave over there so they could have free reign to attack the Saudi and Jordanian governments. They thought it would work because of lack of response to the Cole attack.

They want us out from there so they can consolidate. That is why we are still there because after they consolidate, they plan on expanding. It is either face them now or face them later on our own soil.

Bush is exactly right. These people are muslims. Just read the Koran. Islam teaches that the government should be an Islamic government, like the Taliban. Women can't go to school, or even go out in public without their husband, they must cover their face, men can't shave their beards. They can't help but notice us, we're in the movies, tv, and we're the inspiration for the rest of the world. And they don't mind dying, they'll go to heaven and have sex aith virgins for all of eternity. It seems silly to you, but not to them. Did they ever make any demands of us? Did they ever explain why they did it? They call us the "great satan", because we drink beer and sin against alla so much.

Have you read the Qur'an? Some passages in that book, like some others of its time, preach intolerance and violence. Radical Muslims base their actions on the worst parts of the Qur'an. Even the Old Testament, revered by Christians and Jews, told about bloody sacrifices to appease God. Hopefully we have learned better over the last few milleniums. Radical Muslims just aren't there yet.

If you talk to some people, they don't even believe it happened that way. They believe that, in some form, it was a hoax. I think that they look at half-dressed women, as you say, and other things as a great sin that is spreading through the world but that the U.S. is responsible for it because we're like the "poster child of evil" to them. They think this needs to be eradicated totally and that, in the eyes of Allah, they will be heroes and their families will be praised by all good people for what they sacrificed for Allah. That's what their religious leaders say to them. It sounds like someone needs to be blamed for what they feel they don't have and the U.S. is it, like when the Nazis blamed the Jews for their ills. I think that's why they did it.
