well in the 1900 most roads had what ever was natural to the area but some roads had what is called Chip & Seal but that was very rare but for the most part it is what ever was natural to the area cause they didnt have real cost effective ways to haul a long distance then so what you see is what has been there befor the road was there

It was Horse Dung.
Before the First world War, there were 18million Horses in Britain.
Now you know why they had such good garden vegtables and Roses. All that free Fertilizer was getting delivered straight to the door. The Flies were free as well.
