What Is DNA?
DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid is the genetic material that uniquely identifies an individual. DNA is found in most living cells in the human body.
While finger prints are a valid method of identification, they cannot be used in disasters such as fires. Children's fingerprints continuously change during the first 14 years of life, and therefore should be updated every 6 to12 months. Very small children do not have fully developed ridges so fingerprint identification is difficult at best.
Why Use DNA For Identification Rather Than Fingerprints Or Dental Records?
The arrangement of DNA segments within your genes is unique to each individual. It is the most definitive means of identifying an individual. Laboratory analysis of some of the DNA segments can determine an individual's DNA profile and then match it to another sample for identification purposes.
othe uses of dnais as follows
Identify potential suspects whose DNA may match evidence left at crime scenes
Exonerate persons wrongly accused of crimes
Identify crime and catastrophe victims
Establish paternity and other family relationships
Identify endangered and protected species as an aid to wildlife officials (could be used for prosecuting poachers)
Detect bacteria and other organisms that may pollute air, water, soil, and food
Match organ donors with recipients in transplant programs
Determine pedigree for seed or livestock breeds

cluelesskat maria has the answer up there....I just wanted to state the danger in thinking that DNA sampling and identification is a "full-proof" system. There is nothing wrong with the methods and science behind the system, but it's the human factor and human error that posses a significant impact in the accuracy of DNA identification. Redundancy in any process of DNA identification should be a must, preferably by more then one lab

Importance because it is your unique ID no other people else have and it can not be copy by other.

IF not, imagine thousands of people have the same ID just like you. It confuses people.
