Such a simple thing that many cannot bring themselves to accomplish. This question is not asked out of anger, I am merely curious.

(BTW..."Life is hard" is not a valid reason in my book)

Bradley P,

Now don't you feel better? I'm sure you're smiling after that little rant.

Have a good one!

Some people allow other people in their lives to aggravate them so much for so long that all that negativity builds up and the smiles are pushed so far down that when you do see one it is like a Bigfoot sighting.

Alot of people that I know seem to have the exact reverse problem and they never quit smiling. I guess the main reason people dont smile is the fact that you need something to smile about. If nothing is funny or amusing or even just cute you are not apt to just walk around with a big grin on your face. If someone is at work they tend to find it difficult to smile if they are concentrating on their job, however if they were to think of something amusing or hear a good joke that could help. Parents do not always smile as it is a huge responsibility to raise and take care of children however, children can always make you smile.
I am sure the main reason people dont go around smiling all the time is that simply you are never always happy. I imagine that if I saw someone who constantly smiled I might tend to think they were a little off in the head.

Because some people find it difficult to be phony (not that I'm saying that everyone who smiles is a phony). A genuine person does not walk around grinning like a simpleton. If you are genuinely happy then by all means smile but if you are genuinely unhappy then I do not see why you should have to smile.

It's funny because I've often wondered why people are so concerned about whether or not someone else smiles. Isn't simply being polite enough? Maybe I should post that question.

That's a personal question. Every single person will have a different answer. Personally, I find moments to smile in. Happiness is the light in my daughter's eyes when she smiles at me. It's a couple moments in the sunset on a winter night when the Florida wind is cold but not bitter. It's a moment here. A heart beat there. But it's not a continuous state of being. People have been socially engineered to think they must find perpetual happiness, chemically created or otherwise. Caught up in this, most people can't recognize joy when they have it.

I said the same thing in an earlier post... a smile can make a difference in someone's day! A nurse told me this while I was doing chemo... "If you can sit there for two hours with a needle in your arm and still flash a smile when I walk in the room then I guess I really don't have the right to be in a bad mood because I broke a nail."

And who cares what the motive happens to be? A smile cost you nothing. Just do it!

If you disallow the answer "Life is hard", then in my humble opinion YOU aren't a vaild Asker, but merely a troll looking to bait folks.

Some folks really DO have zero reason to smile and fake being all happy-go-giggly for YOUR benefit Sparky. These reasons can range from: having bad teeth, having no job, having no true love in their lives, having no vote, having no hope for the future, having no muscle control in their face, and having to deal with uptight pinheads on the damn fool internet like YOU.

Not valid my foot. The answer you seek to disallow IS the answer to your question, damn it, and you KNOW it is so.

I'm not smiling. Because for the most part, my life has been ruined by uptight psycho snots like you.

How ya like me NOW, troll-boy?

Some people think that everything is horrible so on and so on...they think they are not worth the world. Yes, life is hard but you have to make it the best you can. Smiling is my escape. I love to smile..so when I think about that question ....the answer above is the only reason why I can think.

You have a very good question. But you know, some people are not as strong as you are with regard to "Life is Hard" thingy. Some cant smile because they really dont know what's happiness. some cant smile because they feel that people would not acknowledge them, and sometimes they feel shy.

It takes a lot less work and muscles
to frown,
I understand it takes like two muscles to frown
and 20 too smile,so people that are always unhappy
usually frown cause it;s easier.

It really takes a lot of work to be happy.
and excuse people for there stupidity.

it;s not any work or hard at all to be an ***
and always complain, instead of searching for the solution.

Even though it takes only 14 muscles to smile and 43 to frown, I doubt it's due to laziness.

The major reasons I can think of are:

* bad teeth
* being shy / fear of rejection
* being so wrapped up in one's problems that others don't matter
* being a naturally miserable person
