not only how do they work, but how to they make them to create the various patterns that you see when they explode??

i saw a smiley face one last night and it piqued my interest!

also, any references to any documentaries would be appreciated. i'd love to watch a "behind-the-scenes" documentary on how they are made, etc...

thanks!

hmm... though I can't send you any links (because I don't know any) I have a general idea of how they're made. First, different chemicals make different colors. Magnesium is red, etc. When the gunpowder ignites, it first shoots the rocket into the air because of the rapid burning creating a force to propel. Then the burning reaches the other chemicals, and explodes them.

Actually, I can send you a link.

The short answer is that there is a charge which explodes when subjected to fire or sparks. The shapes you refer to are made by specially shaped charges: the layout of the explosive material, and reinforcement of the case to cause the explosion to come out as intended. Different chemicals add the colors. There are shows which come out on some cable channels from time to time which tell all about it. Keep an eye on your TV guide.
