I opened a word document that had a hidden executable file. Can this be done? Normally I don't open exe.files, but this one was hidden and when I opened the word document, it opened the exe file. How is this possible?

copy that file into another place and delete the .exe file
and try to run word, is it ok, you don't need that file for word
but don't delete the copied file yet
do a spyware and virus scan to check whether it's a virus/spyware or not
right click on that file, select properties and check the version
you will get information about company, if it's from microsoft or some other renown company, it's safe to use that file

Yes, there are files -- executable or otherwise that can be embedded in documents and when that document is opened, they (the files) get executed. They are like Macros that you see in Word or Excel files... also malwares and spywares can be disguised as hidden files which execute at the right moment.
