N is neutral. You can rev the engine but it will not move. Also put your car in this gear for towing.

1 is the lowest gear (or L on some gearboxes). It is used for towing something heavy or climbing very steep hills. (More power, lower gas effeciency)
2 is the next lowest gear, less power, better fuel effeciency but you shouldn't use it for normal driving.
D is for normal driving... better fuel effeciency.

N is neutral gear

1- low gear

2- high gear

Generally you would only use the 1 and 2 gears in the winter, when you are in icy weather and driving really slow and cautious.
