I have a Dell Inspiron 6000. I paid more than that for it, but I have a lot of memory, DVD burner, etc. And I LOVE IT!!!!!
My IT guy at work said that for normal consumer stuff, Dell's are fine. He said that IBM is a better product, but it is really more than the average person needs to pay for for personal use.

Dell inspiron E1705/9400, Acer Travel Mate series, Sony Vaio FJ series ( dont try tha ones with tha built in cameras, they have a tendency of breaking), Dell inspiron E1505, Dell B130
If you want a budget notebook that is usually I would Highly recommend the B130. IT has Intel Centrino mobile technology built in and a processor close to the cored duo and it is durable. It is basic but a little bit advanced, it goes really easy on your wallet because it is only $439

There has been a "no name" brand come onto the market in the past two years that has great reliability and a wonderful price. Try Averatec. Unfortunately, without knowing what specifications you want, it's kind of hard to recommend a specific model. I can tell you this much, Averatec has several models at or under your budget, and that'll give you a fairly powerful notebook pc as well.

laptop computers can be a rather tricky buy at times, I would suggest that you look out for the cheapest and yet latest desktop on the market,
the best way to do this is on what they call warehouse sale markets some of them are online.
these warehouse owners have a service where they sell laptop computers to normal customers like you and me, however with very reduced prices due to the fact that they do not have as much costs as normal shops do, such as rent and a employees etc. as you know most online shops have rather competitive prices sometimes cutting the laptop price to a half.
one such website for laptop computers is :

Dell Dell Dell. They are good, solid machines with excellent support. You can't go wrong.
They have budget models, and you can also search online for coupons right before you buy.
