We had a near-miss.
A few 100 1,000 miles but a near-miss.
The next 1 will come a lot closer, in approx 20-30 years.
Armageddon here we come either the Film or in Real-life.
They're working on a contingency plan now.

The Earth is struck by many extra-terrestrial objects every day (ever seen a shooting star). The question is more of when we will be hit by somthing of a significant size and we don't know when that will happen. The reason we don't know is that we have not identified anywhere near all of the ofjects in space that could cause a problem.
The answer to the second part is that if the Earth is hit by an object of significant size the majority of the people and other creatures on the planet will die fairly quickly and that those that don't may wish they had as it will destroy any semblance of a civilized life style.
