They are beautiful birds and eat many of the bugs that destroy a garden. However, my garden will not suffer from their absence and it is very hot here and the all night singing is disturbing our sleep

Use a fake owl you can find at home improvement store.
Do not understand why you want to discourage them. They do not bother the garden and they eat the bugs that may do damage to your garden.

Chili Pepper! Sprinkle it arount the plants, and any entry ways to the garden. You need to reapply after a big rain. Be careful not to completly cover the dirt, the sun still needs to get in there.
