I believe that humans do not fear ghosts so much as what ghosts tend to represent. Normally, a ghost is portrayed as an individual who has died but is unable to pass on to any kind of heaven, hell or purgatory that may be waiting. Most ghosts are victims of either violent or tragic circumstances. This can also lead to the belief of physically violent ghosts who can harm still livining beings. The fear of supernatural harm or that there really is nothing "on the other side" is what tends to scare people about ghosts.

In a nutshell, whether you believe (or not) in ghosts is not the point, but rather what you believe about ghosts is what matters. What you believe is strongly influenced by the environment (culture, beliefs, heritage...) you are brought up on. So, first, check the around you to see if you should fear or like ghosts.
I think a discussion about belief in an after-life is way beside the point, but, your system of beliefs is also a determining factor in that case, too. How could a materialist be afraid of ghosts ?
As with many other human fears (in case you do fear ghosts rather than enjoy their company), it is what you project on a given "object" (in a very broad sense) that makes it appealing or appalling, and not its intrinsic characteristics.
For example, rats are feared by most westerners whilst they are revered as sacred by some groups in India, who feed them and have them around as pets.
All the best.

Quite frankly, there are some living humans I fear, like serial killers and murderers, etc. I think for those that fear ghosts it's the fear of the ghost being malignant. Also, people fear the unknown.

Many people believe that "ghosts" are the spirtual presence of former living humans, either known or unknown. The truth and reality is that while they are indeed spirits, they have always been been spirits. They have never been in human form. They do crave contact with humans and know that most humans would avoid any contact with them if they knew their true nature. By use of deceit, they entice humans into contact with them by either making the human believe it is their lost loved one OR on the contrary, they derive pleasure from the emotional torment they cause through their paranormal activities. Either way, they should be avoided.

I believe the reason people fear ghosts isn't because they are ghosts. I believe the reason the fear them, is because, most of us believe that when we die we will be moving on to a better place. How confusing is it then, if you were to believe in a bigger better place and yet most of us don't move on?? Why in heavens name would you want to believe something like a ghost exists if you believe in the after life? This would go against everything in their minds and souls. A ghost proves that there IS something after death, just not what most ppl believe and hope for. (Shrug) My answer! Ghosts for most CAN"T exist because if they do, we, most of the human race, are living a lie!! ME? I believe!

Because we fear the unnatural. When someone dies, their physical presence and consciousness is believed (generally, I'm not going into religion) to 'go away'. A ghost is a dead person. They are not supposed to be here. 'This is wrong'. It's different. That is why I believe some people fear ghosts.

Demons are ghosts and dead people aren't really alive again, but demons make you believe that God's lying so they make a copy of that person and scare you.

Because they are demons of deception (their leader, Satan is "the father of lies"), emulating the voices and appearences of dead loved ones, so as to decieve others regarding the true nature of the afterlife which is either Heaven or Hell. The Bible warns against trying to consult "familiar spirits." What are people scared? becasue these are deceptive demonic forces. When God or an angel appear in peace, they usually say "be not afraid". Put it logically, would a loved one come back to scare you? Even these demons may take the form of soothing, reassuring spirits, (the origin of the term soothsayers?) telling relatives and loved ones what they want to hear. - not always scary. Remember that "Satan himself is transformed [assumes, pretends the appearence/form/role of] into an angel of light." - 2ndCorinthians 11:14. Be warned.
Leviticus 19:31
"Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God."
Leviticus 20:6
"And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people."
Deuteronomy 18:11
"When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations."
Deuteronomy 18:10-15
"There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God. For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do. The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;"
