my kids never learned to hold their bottles themselves. it's really not that big of a deal anyway. and my kids could spoon feed themselves by the time they were 15 months and drink from sippy cups at 11 months no problem. feeding time during the first year should be about bonding. if you hold their bottle, they know you are paying full attention to them. besides, your baby should be off the bottle by 12 months. you can start giving him sippy cups with his milk in them. i don't believe a 7 month old could feed themselves with a spoon though. maybe she tries but i doubt any gets in her mouth. maybe the mom at the laundrymat meant finger feeding...you know, like feeding herself cheerios. and never ever prop a bottle or lay your baby on the floor to eat. it can cause tooth decay and ear infections.

I seriously doubt a seven month old is feeding himself with a spoon very well. I bet theres a huge mess to clean up after.
But as for your child. Sit him in a high chair, and hand him a plastic spoon and something to eat with it, maybe a small bowl of applesauce? Be ready, its going to get messy. Learning to eat is always messy. He should be eating some finger foods right now like crackers, bannanas, etc. So continue to do that. Just let him practise with the spoon when he seems interested and you are in the mood to clean him and the kitchen floor up.
As for the bottle, instead of encouraging him to hold it himself, start using a sippy cup. He's about the age that most babies start to wean from the bottle anyhow.

I am a mother of four and only my oldest held her own bottle the other three never did... try giving him a sippy cup instead of having him hold his bottle that's what i did and once they got the sippy cup concept i started to wean them off the bottle my two boys were off bottles by 9 months... i gave them bottles maybe twice a day, around nap-time and before bed, i enjoyed that time because i was able to cuddle them... as for as for him being able to use a spoon you are right he is still young for that, finger food is great right now and fun for him, but still give him a spoon he'll get eventually.... Hope this helped!!!

The woman with the seven month old who was holding her own bottle either gave birth to a genius or the baby realized the mom was too lazy to feed her and she would starve if she didn't do it herself. Don't rush your son-take the time to bond with him-they grow up really fast. The other mom doesn't have much going for her apparently-just watch-next month she will be telling you all that her daughter is toilet trained at 8 months. Oh joy! Some people just can't stop bragging.

Don't worry so much & remember that each child is different just as every adult is different
my son did not like to hold his bottle either, have you tried
a different kind of bottle perhaps one that is thiner & won't
be so hard to get his hands around ?
once my son turned a year old I got him the spill proof
sippy cups & he held onto those w/ out any problem
good luck & hope this is helpful

If your son doesn't want to hold his own bottle it is because he still needs YOU.
Try really hard not to compete with other mothers. It is never good for you or your child.
Enjoy giving him his bottle and feeding him with a spoon. He won't need you to do it for much longer and they grow older so quickly.

I was so used to feeding my daughter her bottle, I never thought to try to have her hold it herself. It just never crossed my mind, and I still don't see any reason for it. I loved holding her when it was time for a bottle, cause I knew I wouldn't be able to do it forever!

My daughter in 9 and a 0.5 months now and he or she would not carry her bottle yet both. yet like your son will carry her cup and drink juice/water out of it. yet when I attempt putting milk in her cup she merely throws it on the floor, i imagine she merely acquaintances milk with a cuddle off me and enjoys it. i does not difficulty, as long as he's ingesting out of a cup by using himself he's high quality. Its not as if he will be ingesting out of a bottle continuously besides is it, it isn't some thing he fairly needs to come across the fashion to do.

Never, never, never compare your baby to others! Your baby will hold his bottle when he's ready. My baby is 11 mo. and still isn't holding her bottle. She, too, is just starting to army crawl and sit up unassisted. Then again, she was born at 32 weeks gestation, so she's a little bit behind due to her prematurity.

Your child may not be doing it himself because he knows you will. Stop holding his bottle for him and he'll have to do it for himself. My neice did the same thing, only her parents didn't make her and she's almost 2. They still hold her sippy cups. My daughter's were both holding theirs by 3 months because I made them.
