I ask because there is some debate in my company, they are debating banning smoking on company property since the employees seem to not understand the concept of "designated areas", making a mess of the parking lot, etc. and security has observed some employees spending up to an hour outside at a time, holding conversations, etc.

What you meant to say is "Should companies give breaks, to allow some employees to smoke?" Because the way you phrased it means that only smokers get a 'special' break time. - Which is a no-no.

But for moral, and employee retention, yes, a break time would be relevant.

No because smokers need a cigarette once in a while and if they don't get it then they will be irritable and will be unmotivated which will slow production!! If they ban cigarette breaks then they also have to ban coffee breaks and snack breaks! I don't know why some people think it's right to try and take rights away from other people just because they don't agree with what they are doing!!

NO Not unless they are going to also ban junk food at breaks....sugar causes sluggish behavior which means less productivity. In my experience smokers work quicker so they can have things done so they can go smoke. I think its time we leave smokers the hell alone.

I don`t think so, heavy smokers need to have a cigarrette every once in a while, smokers will not be productive nor efficient unless they have a chance to step outside to have a smoke.

I feel banning anything is wrong....If the employee want to take a break and smoke.......so be it.....what. next..banning lunch...because their diet habits are poor.....No one should be aloud to restrict another peson for living the way they chose....to many Liberal in world...they need to get a life.

Yes it does help with productivity. Also with health care costs. In a bigger buisness expense then most people expect.

No. If they aren't allowed to have a break, they will be sneaking to the bathroom for one or other places.
