Hello! I have lived in France (Europe) twice. (Just left there a few months ago in fact.) Have also lived in Reunion and am now living in New Caledonia. The cost of living in Reunion is at least 30% higher than in European France and there is not a lot of work available. New Caledonia is even more expensive. For example, we find the grocery prices here at least double of that in France. Rent is also very high. It is a quiet lifestyle, but way too expensive. It is true that we don't have heating costs and that type of thing, and no cold weather, but it is still cheaper to live in France metropole.
Maybe you should consider moving into a smaller town or new department within France.
I don't want to discourage you. The islands are beautiful and the people tend to be more friendly and open than in Europe. We love the islands, but the cost of living is fairly high.

Being from Guadeloupe, I can tell you honestly, that there is almost no way to live for cheap in the French West Indies,French Guyana and Réunion... You know the unemployment rate is quite high in most of the islands.
People tend to think that having the sun is enough to live well, but it's not all true.
Be sure of what your plans are and try to prepare yourself seriously before taking any decision.
