Healthcare may be expensive. Insurance takes down the risk because they promise that if you pay their fees, they will cover any large costs that you may have if you get sick.

There are many reasons, but a prime motivator is that the cost for anything requiring hospitalization is astronomical -- yet unpredictable.
For instance, consider appendicitis. It is fairly common; it can kill you; but is very easily treatable. Get appendicitis and the cost of hospitization and treatment will run you in the tens of thousands of dollars without health insurance.
Cancer, heart attack? We're talking serious, serious dollars.
This does not even address the lower-cost issues such as routine doctor visits and prescription medicine. Depending on your health insurance plan, you could argue that paying for those yourself would be cheaper... it's debatable.
But in the case of catastrophic medical issues such as a heart attack, nearly nobody can afford to pay that out of pocket all at once.

Because sickness comes to you unplanned and not all people are that well off that they can afford money for hospitalizing 24/7.These are the situations in which health insurance really helps.
