We are going later this year, and wondering where the best place to stay, have read that the Tropicana is good.

Circus Circus was nice and pretty cheap. I think my mom said it was like $40 a night. It's all the way at the end of the strip, so you can walk up and down all you want without having to walk back up a little bit to get to the hotels in the middle. It sounds like it would have a huge circus theme, but it really doesn't. They have some kinds of circus shows and stuff, but it's not childish stuff or anything. There's also an indoor amusement park attached and a whole bunch of restaurants and stores right inside and across the street.

I stayed in the Tropicana in March of this year for a few nights. It's just a hotel room nothing fancy. They are planning to knock the thing down soon - so check with the hotel to see if they have a date yet. The rest of my stay I stayed in the Luxor. Luxor is much nicer, but nearly twice the price. So if money is a matter than the Tropicana is your choice, but if you have a bigger budget I would definetly recommend the large strip hotels like Luxor, Mandalay Bay or Bellagios. Someone mentioned to me that New York, New York sometimes runs specials - look into that one - that's a fine hotel/casino.

We had family stay at the Tropicana last year and the rooms were a little scary for me. They were put in the older portion of the hotel but I hear that the newer rooms are nicer.

Now with that said, I won $600 while waiting for them to check in so that hotel will always be near and dear to my heart...

If you want to be on the strip and want a nice room in a nice hotel but do not want to pay $200 per night, I'd take a look at Treasure Island. It's cheaper than the Mirage and If you book far enough in advance you can probably get in there under $100 per night. (I was married there in 2004 and went back last year and loved it.) My only complaint is that I never won any money there....

If you want to stay in a better location and spend a little less, I would stay at Bally's. The rooms are less than $100 per night. From there you will be attached to Paris and near the monorail, Bellagio, The Flamingo and Alladin. They have a free shuttle that runs every 30 minutes that takes you to 3 or 4 of their sister properties.

If you are okay with staying downtown, the Golden Nugget is a 4 star hotel that you can get into for $60 per night. They are in the process of remodeling it so by later this year it should be really nice.

Another thing you might want to do is go on all of the Vegas hotel websites you think you might want to stay at and sign up for their email mailings. We got a mailing from Wynn's to stay there for $159 per night (which we jumped on).

Treasure Island often has good packages under $100 and they throw in meal and drink vouchers. Ask for a strip view. It's not too big - some casinos make you walk miles to your room. It also has a train that takes you to the Mirage. Then you can walk to Caesar's Palace next door. The Venetian is across the road and, altho it's well worth seeing the canals and copy of St Marks, I didn't enjoy staying there.
They have a Pirate/Sirens battle outside and residents have a separate, uncrowded area for viewing (we were there at New Year and were really glad of this.) They also have a Ben & Jerry's and a Krispy Kreme.

Most of the hotels downtown are less expensive than the ones on the Strip. I've stayed at Lady Luck and the 4 Queens. The rooms are clean -- nothing fancy but, hey, who goes to Vegas to stay in their room? Taxis to get to the strip are kind of expensive but the buses run quite regularly and they are cheap.

I stayed at Terrible's Hotel and Casino a couple of months ago, and we just loved it. The prices are good on both the food and the rooms, and it's close to the center of the strip.

You are also connected with the mandalin bay and the Excalibur hotels plus if you get to stay in the pyramid you get view of the whole of Vegas

Look at airline websites for air/hotel package deals to Vegas. You can save by booking together, and get a chance to stay in a nicer hotel for less money.
