The first team to win a World Cup tournament (which was a tournament set up for club sides, not national teams) was a team from the North East of England: West Auckland. You can read the full story at this link: http://www.rsproductions.co.uk/tv/firstworldcup/
Thanks to usual Yahoo shortening URLs, the last word in the address above should appear as 'firstworldcup'

The First team to win the modern style World Cup was Uruguay, and the first team to win a World Cup trophy outright was Brazil (who won the right to keep the original Jules Rimet trophy on their third victory...though this was not as the answer above suggests 'on the roll' as the three relevant victories were 1958 1962 and 1970...someone else won it in 1966...

The first team to win the 'world cup' was a team called West Auckland FC, back in 1909 Back then it was like the world club championship, but is referred to as the first world cup. I'm from that area (County Durham, UK), and its something we're very proud of. If I remember rightly, we beat AC Milan in the final. Below is a quote from wikipedia, I was going to paraphrase it but I cant be bothered:
'Sir Thomas Lipton produced the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy tournament in Turin in 1909. The Lipton tournament was a championship between individual clubs (not national teams) from different nations, each one of which represented an entire nation. For this reason, it was not really a forerunner of the World Cup. Notwithstanding that, the competition is sometimes described as The First World Cup, and featured the most prestigious professional club sides from Italy, Germany and Switzerland. The first tournament was won by West Auckland, an English amateur side from County Durham, that was invited after the Football Association refused to be associated with the competition. West Auckland returned in 1911 to successfully defend their title, and were given the trophy to keep forever, as per the rules of the competition.'
