Total blunt honesty - that is how you tell them. You call a penis a penis and vagina a vagina. They will trust you more and respect your answers because they will know there is NO WAY anybody could have made all that up on their own. They will believe you. That is the most important part because if they believe and trust you, they will make better choices when they want to start having sex.

Either that or throw them over the convent or monastery wall.

It depends on the age of the child.... Honestly there are no birds and bees... and if your child askes someone else or someone of thier own age, I am sure they (the person telling) is not going to give them the birds and bees speech. Just be honest... Children come from unprotected sex... and sex is when two people get together and do the damn thing, without wearing condoms.

My son is 10... and he learned from Animal Planet.. "That you have to stick the mans middle part into the girls middle part and then a bunch of sperms fight over the egg and one gets in.... then the egg goes down to the belly and the baby grows.... in about 9mos, the baby comes out of thier butt.... well not thier but, but the middle part down there."

I WAS in complete AWEEEEE... when my son told me this, but I would rather him know the TRUTH, than to be comparing life and responsiblity with birds and bees..... Children need to know things and not to have things hidden from them... there are a thousand different places and people your children can get inforamation from, if you want them to get the right information and the right foundation.. you need to instill in them what your values and personal opinions of the situation are!

First of all, how old are they?
My parents told me about sex and babies when I was 4 years old. Don't try to disguise something as something else because that will only confuse them. Just tell them up front, when mommies and daddies really love each other, sometimes they do something with their pee pees, that kids are NOT SUPPOSED to do, and it makes a baby. You could also tell them that When mommmy and daddy really love each other, they go to bed, and God plants a seed in mommy's belly, and it grows into a baby (that's kinda what happens, right?) good luck

I think that the idea of a bird and a bee engaging in sexual relations is disturbing.

Well it depends on why your telling them and what age they are. What are you trying to teach the child and why?The birds and the bee's have to be applicable to the age be more specific and then maybe someone can help you.

I believe that it is not just one conversation - it is something that happens over many years. When kids ask questions you answer them in an age appropriate but truthful and matter of fact manner.

well first the should be your kids, and then honesty, openess and answer the questions they ask, not the ones they dont, the body and its parts how they function is basic, but morality and the ways of the heart, and respect for your partner is what needs to explaned.
there is no place for embarassment or lies.

My mom showed me some booklet from the 60s that had pictures of frogs humping. I don't know the best way to talk to your kids about sex, but that's probably the WORST way!

If you don't think you can come up with a way to tell it to them in a manner that is both appropriate and understanding for them, then wait a few more years.
