if we only get out of life what we put into it, why not just keep it in the first place and save a whole lot of wasted time and effort?

Hmm... its like having a savings account we only get what we invested..somehow somewhere when we ut something in we get much more out.

Because life is not about storing up things on the earth which you cannot take with you when you pass away. It would be more productive to give while you can and let the law of retribution do what it do.
