(1) Marie Brema [orig. Minny Fehrmann): English mezzo-soprano (28 Feb 1856 - 22 Mar 1925). Lola in first English Cavalleria Rusticana. Bayreuth (1894-7). Created Beatrice in Stanford's Much Ado About Nothing (London CG: 1901).

(2) Carrie Bridewell: Mississippi born contralto began her Metropolitan Opera tenure in a concert performance. She appeared five days later as the Third Lady in Die Zauberflöte (30 Mar 1900), the first-ever performance of that Mozart masterpiece at the Metropolitan. She also appeared in Vienna, Dresden, Breslau and London.

(3) Cornelis Bronsgeest: Dutch baritone (1878-1957): He made his debut (1900) in Magdeburg. He sang throughout Europe and toured the United States after World War I. After World War II he helped organize the first opera performances in the ruins of Berlin.

(4) Zina Brozia: Soprano (1880-?) seen here as Gilda in Rigoletto, her Palais Garnier debut role (27 Mar 1908). Her operatic debut was at the Opéra-Comique (13 Sep 1905) as Violetta in Traviata. Sang also in Monte Carlo (1906), Parme (1908), Boston (1911). In 1914 she joined the Théâtre de Gaité à Paris. She continued to sing in Paris until 1950.

(5) Alois Burgstaller: German tenor (1871-1945. He trained at the Bayreuth School under Julius Kniese and made his stage debut (1894) at the Bayreuth Festival in a small role. He was particularly noted for his portrayal of Siegfried. Burgstaller sang the first Parsifal at the Metropolitan Opera (1903), which drew considerable wrath from Cosima Wagner, who was trying to gain exclusive protection for the work. As a result, Burgstaller, as well as Anton van Rooy and conductor Alfred Hertz, were banned from any further performances at Bayreuth. Seen here as Tristan.

(6) Eugenia Bronskaya: Russian soprano (1882-1953): She studied in Milan with Teresa Arkel. She made her debut (1902) at Tiflis. After three seasons at the Kiev Opera and the Bolshoi, she made guest appearances throughout Italy including Venice where she appeared as Tatyana in the house premiere of Eugene Onegin. In America she was seen in Philadelphia, Boston, and Chicago. She possessed a good, but not exceptional, soprano voice and was well liked for her stage presence and devotion to her task. In 1923 she retired and became a professor at the Municipal Conservatory in Leningrad.

(7) Dmitri Bukhtoyarov: Russian baritone. Marinsky Theater.

(8) Lucrezia Bori [orig. Lucrecia Borja y Gonzalez de Riancho] (24 Dec 1887 - 14 May 1960) Spanish soprano. She made her debut (1908) in Rome as Micaela in Carmen, later sang Manon Lescaut opposite Caruso in Paris (1910), and was long a leading performer at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City (1912–15; 1920–36). After 1935 she was a director of the Metropolitan Opera Association. She was notable for her stage presence as well as her lyric voice. In 1915 her career was interrupted by a throat operation.

(9) Borisenko as Radamès in Aida.

(10) Georgette Bastien: Belgian mezzo-soprano. Studied with Mme. Cornelis at the Conservatory in Brussels. She began her career at the Monnaie in April 1901 in roles such as Amneria (Aida), Bragane (Tristan und Isolde), Fricka, Ortrud, Waltraute, Iphigenie, and Gertrude (Hamlet). She created several roles for the Monnaie.

(11) Agnès Borgo: French dramatic soprano (17 Apr 1879 - 7 Jan 1958): Paris Conservatory (1900). Debut (19 Mar 1904) as Aida. She appeared in many Paris Opèra premieres. Appeared throughout France, Belgium, Spain, Russia, and La Scala. Married to tenor César Vezzani. Retired in 1927. She was one of Lily Pons teachers.

(12) Maria Barrientos: Revered Spanish soprano (1883-1946): She was a musical prodigy. She made her vocal debut (1898) at the Teatro Novedades in Barcelona as Ines in L'Africaine at the age of fifteen. She was a member of the Metropolitan Opera (1915-20), particularly admired for her skillfully sung Rosina, Gilda, and Adina (L'Eliser d'Amore). She had a faultless coloratura technique.

(13) Lola Beeth: Soprano: (1864-1940) Born in Cracow. She studied with, among others, the great Pauline Viardot-Garcia in Paris. She made a successful debut (1882) at the age of eighteen at the Berlin Imperial Opera as Elsa in Lohengrin. She sang for six seasons in Berlin and another ten in Vienna. Her Metropolitan Opera debut (2 Dec 1895) was again as Elsa. In her one season there she was seen as Nedda, Elisabeth, Marguerite, Micaëla, Sieglinde, Eva, and Nannetta (Falstaff).

(14) Rudolf Berger: Czech tenor (1874-1915): Originally a baritone he changed to tenor after studying with Oscar Saenger in New York. He made his American debut (4 Feb 1914) at the Metropolitan Opera. He was married to soprano Marie Rappold.

(15) Leon Beyle: French tenor (1871-1922). Beyle made his debut (1896) at the Paris Opéra. He was immediately hired by the Opéra-Comique (1896-1914) as their first tenor. His 1903 appearance as Werther at the Paris Opéra led to a revival of that work and its inclusion among operatic masterpieces. He appeared in several world premieres at the Opéra-Comique, among them La Fille de Tabarin (1901), La Fille de Roland (1904), and La Lépreuse (1912). When Beyle retired, he taught singing in Paris and later in Lyons, the city where he was born and died.

(16) Paul Bender: German bass (1875-1947): He was the first German Don Quichotte, and created the role of Pope Pius V in Palestrina (1917). When he retired he became a singing teacher at the Munich Music School. Published by Joseph Paul Böhm, Munich, 1907. Seen here as Hunding.

(17) Borgatti, Giuseppe: Italian tenor (Cento: 17 Mar 1871 - Reno, Lago Maggiore: 18 Oct 1950): Debut Castelfranco Veneto (1892) as Faust. Create title role of Andrea Chenier at La Scala (1896). Italian heldentenor. Sang throughout Europe and South America but never appeared at Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, or the Monnaie in Brussels. He retired from stage at the height of his career (1914) due to failing eyesight but continued to do concert performances.

(18) Michael Bohnen: German bass-baritone (1887-1965) as Escamillo (Carmen). He created the title role in Jonny Spielt Auf in the first American performance of that work at the Metropolitan Opera (19 Jan 1929). He was an imaginative actor whose onstage antics often created comment and criticism.

(19) Lucy-Bertrand Berthet: Belgian soprano (1866-?): She made her Paris Opéra debut (1892) as Ophelie in Hamlet. She had an outstanding career with the Opéra where she was noted for her Juliette, Marguerite, Thaïs, Elsa, and Zerline (Don Juan). She was Ortlinde in the first Paris Opéra La Walkyrie (1893), and the first Gwendoline and Briséis in Chabrier's operas of the same names (1893 and 1899). Upon her retirement she became a sought-after vocal teacher.

(20) Austrian soprano Anna Bahr-Mildenburg (1872-1947) made her debut (1897) in Hamburg. In that same year she made her first of many appearances at the Bayreuth Festivals. Her first contract (1897) with the Vienna Court Opera stipulated that her salary be 14,000 guilders per year. With that she was required to fulfill ten performances per month with no leave of absence other than theater vacations and a summer break. Although Bahr-Mildenburg was married to the poet and playwright Hermann Bahr, she was romantically linked to the married conductor Gustav Mahler with whom she often worked and who was largely responsible for building her career.
