SURE- martial arts are a great way to lose weight, stay in shape and gain confidence.
Start in the phonebook and find all the different studios NEAR you. You will be going a lot so LOCATION is a factor.
Call and set up a tour and a FREE LESSON - most good studios will give you a few free lessons to "sell" you on their studios. Pay attention to the style you are learning, teachers and other students. PRICE is also a factor and try to negotiate after you have tried a few different studios and styles.
Reading about styles is NOT the same as LEARNING one- go and see what's close, what you like and DO IT. You'll LOVE it and maybe meet some cute girls while you're at it...

HI, I've been doing martial arts all my life and I am also an instructor, I've had students all shapes and sizes.
It is never to late to start martial arts.
I've had many students start from ages 3 to 75
18 years of age is a great time to start and yes you can be good at martial arts, it all depends on your dedication.
pounds don't matter..sure you can't expect to be doing back flips and fancy stuff like that right away but you can work your way and some day you will be doing flips and stuff like that, another great thing about martial art is that you get an awesome work out and that will also help you with the weight, I've seen people go from over weight to normal size and buff too by just doing martial arts and their self esteem goes up like no other.
there are many benefits when it comes to martial arts, and It is never to late to start, so my advice to you would be to do what you want and start martial arts, you'll do great, just have indominable spirit and you'll be amazed of the things you can do.
good luck.

Yes you can, depending on your natural physical abilites(which ussually have very little to do with it). in utah there is a really cool thing called Ultimate Combat Experience. It's a Mixed Martial Arts fighting TV Show(Basically its realistic fighting) and alot of those guys started not much younger than you. Also as a tip, its seems pretty obvious that your going to need ground game if MIXED Martial Arts is your aim at all. Brazillian Jui Jitzu is the best.

Yeah you can. My grandmaster started when he was 26 and he was overweight. He became 8th dan in Tang Soo Do and he lost alot of weight. You could be 54 for all I care and you can turn out to be the greatest martial artist in all time. Anyways, it doesn't matter if your the fattest man in the world. If you practice everything you learn, your very determined, and you wont ever quit, you will be a great martial artist. " Out of 100 students only one will become a black belt. Out of 200 black belts, only one will become master. Out of 500 masters, only one will be a grandmaster." - a fact know all over the world, and everyone is trying to change it.

Martial arts is a great way to tone up your muscles and build endurance. Most have stretching and exercises prior and encourage healthy living habits. Might be a good idea to start stretching prior. Go and speak with an instructor. You will have a lot of fun and do your body good.

Martial arts has nothing to do with age, height, weight. It has everything to do with having a fighting spirit. You've got that.
All the best.

Yes you can be a very good practitionar...don't worry about your wieght...even if you were 90kgs....just start the style you choose , slow daily and bild up the repetitions slowly.
|But don't do any iron palm training yet, because you are 18 and your bones haven't reached their adulthood maturity.
