There was a man, a lonely man
who lost his love through his indifference
a heart that cared that went unshared
until it died within his silence
CHORUS:
And solitaire's the only game in town
and every road that takes him takes him down
while life goes on around him everywhere
he's playing solitaire
And keeping to himself he plays the game
without her love, it always ends the same
and by himself it's easy to pretend
he'll never love again
A little hope goes up in smoke
just how it goes, goes without saying
There was a man, a lonely man
who would command the hand he's playing

I may be wrong, but Solitaire is a one man game. It comes from the word solitary, which means alone. I think the song is saying that he once loved a woman but didn't decide to show his affection until it was too late. Basically, he's one heck of a lonely man, and he isn't willing to do anything about it.

The Carpenters: Solitaire is a card game played on one's own. Solitaire as in solitary. The man, because he did not care enough or show his love to the young lady, lost her. He is now alone whilst around him, life goes on. He will probably die alone - a sad thought, but brought about by his own indifference.........

My interpretation...take it for what it's worth....

The man has all the right 'things' in life...a good hand...but ignores the one thing that makes it all worthwhile...the person he loves. Too late, he realizes that the 'pot' means nothing without someone to care for and return the love to him.

Therefore, he plays solitaire...alone, a love lost, the good cards mean nothing without a prize...he wins, but with no one to share the joy of winning....he's still lost.

Hope that makes sense! I like the lyrics!

I agree with "Silly Me". In addition to that though, there's the element of indifference. Indifference is apathy demonstrated by an absence of emotional reactions and the trait of remaining calm and seeming not to care; a casual lack of concern. My guess is that the man in the song cared for a girl, but never showed it, so he's alone.

Thats the song, that Clay Atkins sung on American Idol.

The songs means, that his heart was broken in a relationship. Scare to try again, or it might be broken once more. He stays single, telling him self there he will love no more. Without her, hopes her has for everything else fades. So he remains single till the day he dies.

I think it's about a man who is scared to love, who chooses the safety of being alone and in "control" than risking feeling emotion and joy and pain .. who isolates himself so he's safe, numb .. but it's not really much of a life, is it? It's sad ... and we all do this sometimes. I've done it - still do sometimes .. it's all about fear and being too scared to step beyond it.

Another song that's similar is "I Am A Rock" by Simon and Garfunkel.

First of all, let me say, I love this song! In my opinion, it's about someone who chooses to be alone for any number of reasons, maybe he's afraid of being hurt again, or maybe another reason. It's a reflection of loneliness in his heart, in his world....being a loner (solitaire means single...one)
