I believe that they haven't had enough hardships or suffering and take everything for granted. Some kids once made fun of my teenage son, when he was at a party and called home to check in with me and ended by saying "I love you"...he told them "I know which side my bread is buttered on"!!

This is a slang term meaning taking something for granted. People do this because of the privileges they have received thus far makes them think they are entitled to the treatment all the time, it's when the privilege is revoked they find out where the bread is buttered.

Don't forget that we are all individuals! Sometimes we can apply ourselves, pretend everything's OK when it's not always, be it in our relationships, work environment etc. But comes the time when we don't feel good pretending anymore. We've moved on, feel more self assured, not prepared to allow anyone/anything to cause us stress. Sometimes it's because of stress! We don't feel as calm as we normally do.

Best thing to do is to decide that it is up to us to butter our bread and make sure we do!

Literally or figuratively? It kind of depends on the situation you're referring to, but I'll assume it's a general question of why people sometimes act against their own best interests -- sometimes, protecting (or sucking up to) the people with the money isn't the best choice. The answer is that it depends on the person; there are lots of reasons why personal success or survival is less important to some people in certain situations. Sometimes it's a matter of principle -- you know a certain action will probably get you fired/demoted/punished, but you do it because it's the right thing to do. Supporting someone with whom you disagree on a fundamental level might not sit well with your conscience, even though it means speaking out or going against the person or people who write your paycheck.

Some people are just stubborn, and when they disagree -- not necessarily on any issue of real importance -- they just dig in their heels and say, "I'm right, you're wrong, and I don't care who you are!"

And I suppose some people are just plain stupid -- through careless actions and imprudent statements (in public), they alienate their bosses and jeopardize their own position in whatever organization they're in, because they simply don't think things through.

Do you? Does anyone? The good things that come to us are from all over the human race, from all over the world, from all over the universe, and we do err when we examine our blessings too closely to try and identify their source. Indeed, simply identifying a gift as a blessing or curse might be an exercise in futility, requiring an examination of a picture of a magnitude larger than we mere mortals are capable of.
