You can see copies of their annual international report and their annual US nonprofit tax returns (form 990) as well as financial reports for 2003 and 2004. It appears that in 2004, 75% of their budget went to benefitting animals, while about 20% went to fundraising efforts and less than 5% to management/general, which means operating expenses and management salaries. This is well within the standards of the Better Business Bureau for how much of a charity's funds should go to its programs. (They say at least 65% should go to programs, and no more than 35% should go to fundraising.) So if you believe in their goals, this appears to be a well-run charity. It's always good to ask this sort of question about the causes you support!

We take our responsibility to protect animals very seriously. Every possible effort is made to stretch each dollar for the animals and to keep costs down.

WSPA USA's expenditures for 2011 were allocated as follows:

86% to Animal Protection and Humane Education
12% to Fundraising
2% to Management & General

WSPA USA is a non-profit organization that receives no government funding, and our work is made possible entirely through donations from animal lovers like you. We are part of a global organization that has established strategic priorities to combat the world’s most intense and large-scale animal welfare issues.

You want to give to the poor? try driving around the ghetto and handing it to a struggling single mom, tipping the waiter a little extra, paying for someone's gas that has a junky car. Buying a kids milk for the day. Seeing someone out to eat who can't afford a meal and buying them one. Take a veteran from veitnam to lunch, go to the nursing home with flowers for some residents, take a toy to the cancer ward.
Give something without expectations, even if they drink or smoke. It is the giving freely that counts. You pay it forward.
Buy an expensive toy and give it to a child just for the heck of it. Take good food to the food pantry not crap, dont they desesrve a little happiness? Buy the classiest barbie for toys for tots, not just cheap odd lot toys.

World Sociey for the Protection of Animals has a fairly low rating as far as efficiency. 25% of your donation goes to fund raising and administration. There are more efficient organizations. See the link below.

I don't like the way the advertise to get funds.... and how much money goes into that.
I did not hear or read any 'bad stuff' about them yet.
