Landlord has had regular rent for twelve years and now prefers to listen to one of my neighbours scandalous comments about me from others not part of the contract?

I would look into the rental laws for my area, and then possibly contact an attorney. If you feel you are being mistreated, you do have rights, and should do all that you can to protect them.

Side with the landlord in a sort of "the neighbour's a bit mental and has taken an irrational dislike to me, I don't know why' kind of way. Don't give the whole thing any more lip service than that. The more you get defensive - the more you try and make a case - the more guilty you appear. Just continue to pay your rent and ignore all attempts by either your landlord or your neighbour to goad you into doing or saying anything you might regret.

Landlords can be extremely selfish, greedy, tight-fisted and money obsessed. So, I would advise just paying the rent on time and trying not to run up arrears. This enables you to see them as little as possible. Otherwise they just want to run your life for you and make sarcastic, self-obsessed, miserable comments about other things concerning your life, which have nothing to do with them at all. My old landlord was an awful man and was hypocritical, swearing crudely all the time, whilst pertaining to be a professional businessman! I'm so glad to have gotten away from him once and for all.

Ignore it. Chances are the landlord isn't paying any mind to what he was told/heard. Landlords tend to stay out of the mix unless it directly involves them. In this case, the only thing directly involving him would be you paying your rent and keeping the rental in it's proper condition. Otherwise he could give two shits less. Good luck. If you are bothered by it that much, find a new place to live.

I had the same problem with an old landlord. I tried to move out and he told the prospective landlord that I was a drug-dealer and that the apartment was infested with roaches (neither of which was true) based on hearsay from my a**hole neighbor.

Really the only thing you can do is get out of there, and find a new landlord who is willing to ignore what your current landlord says. That's what I did. Hopefully your credit is good; that helps your credibility in this case.

Paying rent for 12 years!! You've half bought that house for him! You are a landlord's dream - 12 years of income! Don't let him forget that!!!

Could you not buy your own place?

I have an idea - cook him a meal to say you want to be friends with him again and that you don't want all this unplesantness. Cook a lasagne or something like that, but include something nasty in it of your choice (dog poo, a sneeze, hairs etc) and give him it saying you've cooked too much. Lol, good luck!

just dont get involved and make sure you rent is on time ..as long as you pay on time he cannot evict you..If he makes comments to you ask him to put his concerns on paper ..keep a diary of events in case you need them later..
