to "rip" a dvd from the disc and put the files on your computer there are a huge number of resources at http://www.doom9.org the best toolset here is called "Gordian Knot" use this tool to rip the *.vob files off of the disc- these are the video files on the disc and the audio must be ripped on the tool seperately- then you can ask the tool to code the two item together in a smaller file to view on your PC. The processing time for this tool can be between 2hrs and 8hrs which is why dvds are so hard to copy but if you follow all the instructions you will be fine.

Happy ripping :)

Of course you should only do this if you own the original DVD but you can go to Start -> My Computer -> single click the drive with the DVD -> right click and select Explore -> when the contents come up do a CTRL+A, then CTRL+C -> go back to My Computer -> double click target hard drive -> find folder where you want to save the DVD contents -> create new folder if necessary -> double click the target folder -> CTRL+V and the contents will copy

Use a program called DVD Shrink, it'll keep the file small enough to burn on a single layer DVD. For backup purposes only. Use the link. Good Luck!
