I think he feels sorry for the morons that are disrespectful enough to speak of him the way they do. He probably feels pity for their ignorance.

i feel sorry for the fact that he seems that he's in way over his head at work: i know i wouldn't be comfortable in that situation. i am sorry that the only people he seems to answer to are his business buddies and his cronies... but i'm sure that they reassure him that he's doing the right thing and he believes it. i'm sorry that he's a slave to the dollar and those people he's surrounded himself with. i'm sorry that he's no wiser at 60 than he was at 16.
