I guess you'll have to leave it off your resume or application. It doesn't sound like you worked there very long anyway. Many employers do check your references, so it wouldn't be wise to include it, unless there is a good reason and your work record wasn't THAT bad. Or you could ask them not to contact your current employer because they don't know you're looking for another job.

It would help if you gave more information. How long did you work at your recent job? What do you mean by "bad work record?" Were you fired? Why were you fired?

There are many strategies for dealing with this situation.

If it was only short term, lie and say you were on holiday, leave it off your work experience.

Take any job where people dont care about your work history, like volunteer work and then get a reference from them.

If you can talk to your previous employer and get the low down on what you can expect if a reference check is made, so you are prepared. This can be a hard thing to do, but it is possible.
Often if you have your tail between your legs you can minmize the damage.

If you can let me know more about your situation and I will try to help you more

try working for a temp agency for awhile and they will send you to different types of places. If the employeer likes your work they will usually hire you on after you meet your temp requirements.
