There is no single most beautiful piece of classical music, it depends on the persoan preferance of the person and also by what you mean by 'Beautiful'. However, the music of Shostakovich is highly regarded as some of the most beautiful and evocative music. His music, particularly his symphonies, captures of the feelings of paranoia, fear, etc that were caused by living under the Soviet Union and are therefore very intense and emotional.
The music of the Great Masters, Mozart/Beethoven, is also beautiful, although less breathtakingly powerful. Typically, music written before the 1850's was not written as an artform, but merely to please whoever had commissioned it. This later music is known as the Romantic Era, so named because the music was often very beautiful, emotional, and romantic. The use of program music--musc that tells a story--also started around that time. It's all good!

I particularly enjoy "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" by Ralph Vaughan Williams, but often much depends on my mood.

Well I love anything Beethoven. And I love "Christmas Eve" (I think that's what it's called), it's my favorite piece.
