How do you balance this equation?
MgCO3 = MgO2 + CO2

You can't balance that particular equation because one of the compounds is not written correctly. Mg has a +2 charge and O has a -2 charge so it should be MgO instead of MgO2

This would make your equation into:

MgCO3 --> MgO + CO2

The equation balances itself. No extra work needed! :) Hope this helped!

MgCO3 = MgO + CO2
balancing is making the reactants equal in number to the product or vice versa...
