Board feet is a little different than square feet if the lumber is more than an inch thick. Basically 1 bdft can be a 12inx12inx1in piece. But if you throw in different numbers a board foot has to equal 144in. Basically if you get a 16ftx10inx1in piece of lumber you will have about 13.3 bdft. The business owner should have explained bdft to you. Not everyone knows there is a difference.

1000 bdft is alot if all you need is a little lumber for a few small repairs. I can't believe that even a small town lumber yard would require that much. I might actually drive farther to get what I need.

with a measuring tape measure the lenth of the place where you are putting the board and then go to lumber yard and get the size if it is smaller then the size the board comes in then get a size up and cut it to fit with a skill saw.

It's simply the linear footage of whatever size board you are lookinig at purchasing. Check how much you need vs. the cost for 1000BF. If you don't need that much wood, surely you can find a local hardware store that sells in smaller quantities.
