make positive you get the right seed, not all sunflowers are tall (there's a bush style you don't need that) plant 2 seeds(a million would fail, if 2 prevail you could transplant the weaker a million) in a huge bath so that you do not might want to disturb the basis equipment later on, use a strong prosperous potting compost with a huge handful of horse manure mixed into it make positive that's nicely drained, have a strong help (2 by using a million roofers batten will do nicely) waiting because the top of the sunflower is heavy and could favor more advantageous than a cane, even as plant is two foot tall water and feed two times weekly with a tomato feed or liquid manure (horse manure diluted in water, sunflowers can enhance 18+ft tall so placed it up antagonistic to a south dealing with wall.

Give them a sunny location, good or plain soil, they seem to do well in 'bout anthing. Water regularly, fertilize when you plant seed, then a dose of peters 20-20-20 every 15 days or so until flowering.
You may be watering too much. Depends on soil type. and weather conditions.
Mine are in full flower, standing from 6 to 10 feet high.

I grow 2,000 - 2,500 sunflowers every year and sell to local Nursery. They need little attention. You are probably watering toooo much. I throw the seeds in the ground (a sunny location), keep them weeded and limed and if no rain I water. VERY successful
