In America, you always turn the top to the right, just like tightening screws. If your not sure that the valve is off, just try to flush the toilet and see if it fills up again.

Closing a valve is always to the right, or clockwise. To open something, turn counter-clockwise.
Hope you turn that water off before you flood out!

Picture yourself looking at the valve with the knob facing you.
NOW righty tighty, lefty loosy.
And once you turn it off, why not pick up your float, and see if it worked? Just to check!
The jar thing probably works too. but that confused me,
because you normally twist the cap off.

Place a jar/bottle with the lid facing you and the back of the jar facing the valve. How you close/open the jar is the same for the valve..

To help with your question I was always told righty tighty Lefty loosey so that may help.It works with just about anything.

Right or Clockwise. When you open it be sure to open ALL the way as some may leak. It have a seal if you open all the way.
