The Suzuki SV650 is definitely the best for many reasons.
1. It's not overpriced. You won't be too sad when you inevitably drop your bike.
2. At 650 cc's, it's powerful enough to jet, but it won't scare you or blow your unexperienced socks off.
3. You won't get sick of this bike after 4 months like most starter bikes. I've been riding mine for about 2 years now.
4. It looks and moves great!!!

I think it is Honda makes a Nice 450 Street and Trail Bike so you can enjoy the best of two worlds. Look into it if you enjoy Trails. It may be a 500 I not remember, I looked at one a year ago and was considering it.

Kawasaki Ninja 500 is good, but best is Suzuki SV650 or Honda 599.

Ninja 500- without any doubt (although i own one so call me biased)
Smooth throttle, enough power to keep you happy for a long time, so many parts that repairs are cheap compared to others, Bulletproof- I taught my sister and my roommate how to ride it and it has been dropped on average about 12 times. LOL
