I have a '94 Chevy Cavelier.

How can I remove rust from the car and prevent future rust from building up?

It's a 12-year old Cavalier! Just throw it away and get a new one!

Is this rust just on the surface of the paint, or has it eaten through the sheet metal of the car's body? If it's just on the outer skin, then you may be able to remove the rusted spots with sandpaper or some other abrasive then re-prime and repaint the damaged area. If it's penetrated through the skin, (rust holes) then the only permanent way to repair it is to cut out the rusted spot and replace the damaged skin with new metal. You must completely eliminate all the rust, or it will just keep coming back. Either way, it's a lot of work and expense for a car that's almost reached its end.

Keeping a car clean and waxed is the best way to keep rust from forming in the first place. If you live and drive in a city that uses a lot of salt or chemicals on the roads in the winter, or live near salt water, you should take you car to a car wash at least once a week. Find one that has an under-body wash that will wash out road salt and chemicals from underneath the car's body. Wax the car's body at least once every three months to help keep it shiny and free of rust.

the only way to remove rust from your car is to buff it out. you cant really "remove rust" with a liquid cleaner or whatever.your gonna have to start from the bottom. the way to prevent rust is by keeping it out of the sun on really hot days, try and keep it away from salt water (ie. the beach/ocean mist) because it eats away your paint job and metal below it

You may find this hard to believe, but there is now a product available anywhere body repair supplies are sold that actually turns rust back into metal through a chemical action!
