My husband is 29 and in good health. Last night he started having tightness in his chest and had hard time breathing. He also threw-up. (He would not go to the hospital). It lasted about 12 hours coming and going. He says he feels fine this morning. Any ideas what this could be? Yes, my mother in-law and I are both trying to get him to the doctor, but he is very hard headed when it comes to doctors.

Hello, I am a pharmacist from Oklahoma

From the way your describe your husband's symptoms (shortness of breath and chest tightness) it sounds more like a mild asthma attack rather than a (more serious) myocardial infarction. An asthma attack will feel more like chest tightness rather than pain (of a heart attack or MI) and will not result in pain radiating to his extremeties. Are the symptoms brought about by cold temperatures or physicial exertion?

Asthma affects people even in relatively good health as its primary cause is unknown. Though it is relatively rare for a 29 year-old in good health to have a heart attack, it is not impossible. However, heart attacks are usually consequences of coronary artery disease which results from plaque or blood clot occlusions to the coronary arteries. These are usually products of lifestyle. To me it sounds more like asthma.

He needs to schedule an appointment with his physician immediately as these symptoms are unlikely to go away. In fact, they will probably get worse without treatment. Regardless of what these symptoms are indicative of, he will need tests, treatment and careful monitoring to make sure that they don't progress into life-threatening severity.

Does his family have a history of blood clots? My brother in law had gotten a blood clot in his lung and it was causing him to have trouble breathing, the next day he went to the hospital for a scheduled hernia surgery and after wards he started to turn green and he could not breath. He couldn't get enough oxygen in his blood and the doctors couldn't figure out why. They did a cat scan or something on him and found the blood clot in his lung. They said if it had broke loose that it would have went to his heart and killed him. They said that they normally only find these in the autopsy. Hardly ever before it kills the person. That was last year. my brother in law was in the hospital for 2 weeks. He was 22 at the time and has NEVER had any health problems at all. He has made a full recovery. Sorry, I don't mean to scare you or anything but it is better to be safe than sorry. Hope he's okay.

You should check if your husband has asthma. I have asthma, and tightness in the chest and a hard time breathing. More and more people are getting asthma because of factory chemicals in the air. I'm not sure about the throwing up part though.

This is very serious..he needs immediate intervention by going to the ER..they need to do a complete work up on him on him including a EKG, and cardiac enzymes..does he have a cardiac history or have heart history in his family?..what he has to understand that if this is cardiac related then there are procedures and medications that could help reverse damage..he needs to see someone right away..is he avoiding getting help because he is scared?.good luck to both of you...

He needs to get regarded at faster really than later. i'm no usual practitioner yet he ought to have C.O.P.D. (persistent obstuctive pulmonary disease).

It sounds like a Myocardio infarction or heart attack you should TAKE HIM TO HOSPITAL or Doctors. They will run cardiac enzymes test and ekg and doctor might want to run a cardiac stress test. WHY WOULD YOU ASK A DUMBA$$ QUESTION LIKE THIS AND NOT CALL AMBULANCE OR TAKE HIM TO HOSPITAL.

first consult a doctor who would help him...and if everything is fine then he can start practising yoga....10-20 minutes a day of yoga is the best

yoga breathing exercise is the best

simple breathing exercises would help him stay fit and agile throughout the day....

It could be a sign of impending heart attack. You have to convince him to see a doctor.
