Generally a butch/dyke lesbian is one who is more masculine in appearance and demeanor. Butch lesbians tend to take on more of the dominant side of a relationship. Many exhibit male traits and apperances, by wearing short hair cut like a guy, wear male clothing, and are in male dominated career fields. They tend to exude confidence and assertiveness like a male as well as at times, aggression. It has been my experience, that the butches I've known, tend to overexaggerate masculinity and take on the most stereotypical aspects of male behavior. *********, beligerentness, rebelliousness, aggression, assertion, things of that nature. Most do not see themselves as male and are perfectly accepting of themselves as female. Yet, there ARE others that consider themselves to a be a transgendered butch.
Usually (not always) butches date femmes. A femme would be just the opposite of a butch. A girl that's very feminine, yet still a lesbian. In these types of relationships, the butch is very dominant in the relationship and usually assumes the "top" role in the bedroom as well. In these relationships, the butch tends to be the 'provider' for the household and the "leader" if you will.
Granted these are all generalities, and there are exceptions to every rule. I know many lesbians that use the "butch" identity because they're very athletic and sporty like men are, or they claim to be "butch" because of their educational level and independence. However, most butch lesbians identify as butch because they are not "girly" enough to consider themselves femme. It's all really about self identification and labels, and I'm the kind of person that hates labels. I'm just me.

I feel that the first person to answer this question descibed what a butch lesbian is pretty well. I'm a soft butch myself. I'm 31, but often mistaken for being a teenage boy, lol. I also like to say i'm a dyke, because to me the word dyke is very powerful, and usually isn't confused with being bisexual like the the word lesbian is.

A butch is a term used for a girl that has male characteristics, such as- dresses tom boyish, doesn't fuss with dresses, nail polish, all the girlie girl things. But has a sense of being a protector, strong, yet gentle with loved ones. A dyke is used in damns to plug holes. In the dictionary my picture is not under dyke!!!!!!
