As long as the total length of all the songs that you put on the CD is equal to or shorter than 80 minutes, you can put however many songs on the CD. What is the total length of all of your songs? For example, if your friend's songs are about 2 minutes each, 30 times 2 is 60; so, he is putting 60 minutes worth of song on a 80-minute CD; of course, this is okay. However, if your song is about 4 minutes each and you want to put 30 of them on a CD, 30 times 4 is 120; you are trying to put 120 minutes worth of song in a 80-minute CD, of course, you cannot do such a thing.

If the CD is normal old Audio CD then whatever 30 songs he put in the cd never exceeded the 80 minutes length ... if it is a MP3 CD then it is very possible and not only 30 songs but much more i once burned a cd with 400+ songs in MP3 format ... it depends on which device you are going to use to play that CD ... your friend probably are talking about normal Audio Cd's ... there is no magic in this type .... 80 minutes is 80 minutes you cannot change that ... you can burn the cd with 80 songs but each song's duration will never be more than 1 minute ....otherwise .. if you have an MP3 CD Player you could play with the bitrate and compression methods to get 1000+ song on a single 700MB disc .... i hope i put it clearly ...

Some CD writing programs allow you to "overburn", which gives you a few extra minutes of space. Sometimes this works fine, but with some DVD/CD writers this can cause problems and perhaps even damage older writers.

You can read a little more about overburning here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_disc_recording_technologies#Overburning

But the most obvious question is: how long were the songs he burned?
