it doesn't really matter unless you are developing programs for some particularly resource intensive process such as a database app with large amounts of data or to meet some very specific need such as a production process using a particular processor chip

If you are a programmer or designer *cough and cracking/exploiting cough* of any sort (including graphics) it is good to have two main componants (since you aren't using it for gaming)

A. Loads of RAM (1-2GB of RAM or DDR)
B. Processing Power (Preferrably Intel Pentium 4 or D)

Now, if you are procesisng loads of data, whether it be scripts, programs, or passfiles xD, it's good to have lots of ram. The reason? If you have just a powerful processor (such as a 3.2Ghz w/HT) with 256MB or 512MB of RAM then you won't be able to get the fullest out of it. It can process plenty but your computer will still be slow.

So, because im lazy, i leave you with the specs of your Programmers *cough 1337 hacker cough* PC that you should get:

-POWERCOLOR X800GTO256MBDDR3 Radeon X800GTO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16

-SAMSUNG Combo Drive Beige (or what ever color) IDE Model SH-M522C/BEWN - OEM

-Intel Pentium 4 640 Prescott 800MHz FSB LGA 775 EM64T Processor Model BX80547PG3200F (it has Hyper-Threading and its a 3.2GHz)

-Gigabyte GA-8I915P Duo(REV 1.1) Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 915P ATX Intel Motherboard (supports HT & up to 4GB of RAM)

-G.SKILL 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) Unbuffered System Memory Model F2-4200PHU1-1GBNV (it has a heat spreader too)

-Audio Card not important, pick your choice. Choose something from Creative.

Anything I'm missing? You don't need an AMD Athlon 64 processor because you are for programming, not gaming. To make the AMD Athlon 64 worth it's cost you'd have to over clock it. If you want to overclock it, go ahead just get a good fan made by ZALMAN.

You can find any of that from www.newegg.com that's where i went to find you parts. Or google it.
