Since you didn't run through very deep water I would say that you
don't have to worry about engine damage.
If you go in water deep enough to cover the engine that's when it's time to worry!
Go ahead and check the oil to see if it has any signs of water mixed with it.
If not, don't worry... it just stalled because water splashed up onto the engine.
If you think water is in the oil... just change the oil and it will be ok.

Ankle-deep shouldn't hurt it, how about checking the wiring to see if anything got soaked? If you hit a puddle, it's going to force water up into the engine compartment. That's going to expose every old piece of insulation, and rubber boot on the engine systems, directly to water. Take off the lid to the air cleaner, and check that for water, but chances are the electrical wiring got soaked and it needs to all be dried out. If you live in a normally dry area, leaving the hood open on a sunny day should take care of it. There's water displacement spray too, or have a mechanic go through the electrical system and inspect all connectors for moisture. Check your fuses, too...

im a dirt biker and i ride through a lot of water all the time its realy hard on an engine (espeacialy something that isnt designed for it) but once should ok i would think it stalled becuase sometime engines do that when they are cooled extrememly rapidly
just do a jeneral check and make sure nothing is realy messed up and if you feel you should change the oil than go ahead and do it

the water probably hit the started and shorted out the electrial, as long you don't get water in the air intake or the exhaust should be ok.
