Do they give you the worst phone out there imaginable?

Most of the phones they give away are not total crap, they just are not the greatest phones available. They dont have the fun features like cameras or MP3 players or anything like that. They are just a phone. Most companies do require you to sign a 2 year contract to get the free phone, because the company actually loses money when they give the phone away. They may get a discount, but they aren't getting it for free either. There are some companies that don't require a 2 year contract. I know T-Mobile only starts you with a one year contract and you can actually get a free or significantly reduced phone every year.

Another reason that they promote the free phone is that once you are in the store you may find a model that you like better that has better features and you can upgrade. That is pretty common.

Yeah, they're free because they want to lure customers in to their business. Then, they make you sign a 2-year contract.

Free is not free.
