I have tried being nice to her. She just says I do not understand what she is going through. That is not true. I told her that it is bad for her health and that people do not want to be around her when she is unclean. She won't listen. What do you do when you have to be around this person.

I had someone like that. I stood as far back from them as i could and honestly tried to avoid them at all costs.

When asked, I told them that "hygiene" is not a greeting and that bathing is the mark of a civilized person.

They didn't change, but they stayed away from me.

Tell her that the skin is the largest organ of the human body and keeping it clean is the way to avoid infections etc. Is she from another culture where this is more acceptable? Also tell her that she will not be well considered for moving up in a career if she continues in this way. Is there a medical condition that makes her bathe less? If so she needs to go to a doctor or counseling, is she depressed? Tell her as a friend that she needs to get to the bottom of this before she loses out on friends and jobs.

Is it a situation where you are required to be around her? like work or school?

I had a situation recently at work like this, and we went to our boss and had him remind everybody, not just the one person, that good hygenie was a requirement for employment. When that wasn't enough, we got together and bought a "hygenie basket" for the person, including soaps, shampoos, deodorants, a toothbrush and toothpaste. They got the meaning.

When I was in the Marine Corps, things went a little different. When somebody had a hygenie problem there, first time we talked to the guy, if that didn't work, we gave them a G. I. shower. That always fixed the problem.

This person sounds like she has some serious issues, or perhaps has an extreme phobia of water. She should go to counselling. Not keeping yourself clean can lead to all kinds of illnesses.

Start giving her small gifts like scented soaps and body lotions, loofas or bath sponges, body sprays. If you find a scent that she really likes she may start using it....if not just tell her that until she cleans up her act, you'll be steering clear.

I wouldn't be around this person, maybe that will give her a clue and the initiative she needs to get a bath.
