Thanks for the SPA idea, but that's what we have been giving each other on our birthdays for the past 3 years! -- Her birthday party will be at my house, so I cannot throw a surprise party ... any other ideas?????

If you have room at your house, why not give her a surprise 40th birthday party. If you don't have enough room, rent a hall and invite as many of her friends that you know. That would be enough of a gift, and I'm sure she'd be happy....and well as surprised. You can ask a few friends to help you get the party together, and maybe even chip in, so all the expenses aren't yours alone.

Or....you can offer to watch her 3 kids and get her a gift certificate to something/somewhere she really would enjoy. Get the gift certificate for TWO, and she can take along whoever she'd like.

Watch her kids and give her an evening with her special someone. When she comes back to get her kids, have her favorite dessert and champagne waiting. Decorate! Play her favorite music and invite a few close friends to join you. This way she'lll get to celebrate with her children too. While she's away have her kids make her cards, posters, gather flowers, write a tribute etc.

What about getting her a gift certificate to a spa? Or why not take her to dinner without the children? If she enjoys fine wines, why not select a very 'special' bottle of wine for her to enjoy at her leisure?

since your friend is going to be 40 and being a fashion designer clothes may not be good enough . so you could go in for home decorative items or you could also try my all time hit a framed photograph of you and your friend to preserve your memories forever

fashion designers work hard, my wifes twin is on in NY city.
offer her out to dinner with freinds and pick up her share, books if she like to read, they are hard to buy for.
