I'm not talking shading in. It looks like they take a Sharpie marker and draw lines where their bows should be. Some of them look downright scary.

I am not sure. My husband is from Mexico and we have been married over 12yrs. and I have not seen his sister's, aunt's doing this,or any of the women in his family doing it. But I know what you are saying, I have seen other Mexican girls drawing on eyebrows. It does look funny. It may depend on what area of Mexico they are from.

I don't know why anyone thinks this is ok...I've seen plenty of white girls do it too. I used to have a music teacher in grade school who shaved them off, then drew them in with green or blue pencil! Very popular in 1930's Hollywood, not so much anymore!

I think it has to do with Hispanic culture and Cholos and Cholas.

Traditionally, Cholo or Chola refers to Hispanic gangster culture (Cholos are guys, and Cholas are girls).

I am from Northern California, and while I knew about Cholos, I never really knew any of them. When I was in the 8th grade, they closed our high school, and it was decided that we would be bussed to a bigger high school in a neighboring city. It was kind of interesting, but also kind of scary for us, because we were all a bunch of middle class white kids, and we were going to be going to a school with a lot of minority kids, mainly Latinos. There were gangs and stuff in our new high school, and we were completely out of our element. They sat us down at the end of the year and gave us a crash course in dealing with Latinos because we just didn't move in the same circles.

One of the first things I noticed the following fall when high school started was the the Latino kids had a very distinct look. The boys all wore baggy chinos cinched at the waist, wifebeaters, and overshirts with only the top button fastened. The all had longish hair which they combed straight back and they used something that made their hair shiny. And they smelled heavenly! Even though I knew that some of them were carrying weapons or had them in their lockers, I never had any trouble with them, and I don't know of anyone else who did, either. They pretty much kept to themselves.

The girls also had a very distincive look. They mostly wore very tight black pants, and kind of form fitting sexy tops. And they all did their makeup the same way. Their eyes were lined heavily in black, and their eyebrows, regardless of color or thickness, were drawn with thick black strokes of eyebrown pencil. The shapes were always the same and had a very defined look. Their blush was interesting; they drew a strange kind of pointy triangle with some kind of dark pencil, probaly a lip liner, then filled it in completely with blush. It was very stylized, and they all did it the same way. They also lined their lips with black or nearly black liner, and then wore lipstick that was several shades lighter, so you could really see the outline of their lips. They all had the same hair--kind of big and teased on top, with bangs curled down on their foreheads, and then really long and permed in the back.

They really made us think that Cholo culture was a scary, dangerous thing, but that hasn't ever been my experience. It is alive and flourishing all over the place, but for the most part, they are just regular old people. They tend to stick togthere, and, as with any group of people, if you treat them with respect and courtesy, you get the same in return.

Don't let the Latina girls scare you. Be nice, and leave them alone, and they will most likely do the same for you.

Some people discuss this and judge because the this drawn on eyebrows are "ghetto". Well, it's true. The American public looks down on this "fashion statement" because it's usually favored upon the "lower class". Every nation, culture, ethnicity, etc has it's standards/ norms. So I say, let everyone be. But... in America, they look at this as stupid, low class, uneducated, and gangsta, not in a good way. "Gangsta" is considered stupid, or dumb.

I don't have a clue why they do this. I guess they think it is cool. Even thought I am Hispanic, I don't like it. I did not like the way you stated your question saying it is only Mexicans because I have seen Latinas, Anglos, and African American women do this too.

Not Mexican but my aunt does it...... creepy. I hear she shaves her eyebrows off then uses a template to draw them back on. I'd hate to see her without.

You know, I have wondered the same thing. I am hispanic and I DO NOT do this because of the odd look it gives you. Maybe one of these days we will know the answer, although I guess they think it looks good? Gives 'em kind of a surprised look all the time. Also they tend to outline their lips with a burgandy/blackish lip liner/tire polish and do their lips a much lighter pinkish color. Why? I wonder if they even know.... I guess, like I said before, they must think it looks good. If you find out any different, let me know k? haha LOL

If you have sparse brows, you can apply a little color to the top of each eyebrow and brush it in place. With a hint of color on your eyebrows, you can enhance fine eyebrows and improve the general appearance of your eyes. Use eyebrow pencil or powder that closely matches the color of your eyebrows. The idea is to color or shape your eyebrows to enhance your beauty, not to have the eyebrows become the center of attention on one's face.
