This question has been posed in many different forms by many going way back. Nonetheless, would it not be foolhardy for Yahoo to make such a claim, without the blessing of the gentleman? Mind you, in today's highly materialistic consumer environment, the conceptualization, "marketing trick" is quite viable.

the last thing Stephen Hawking needs is a marketing "trick". he's looking for awareness.
the last thing yahoo needs is a lawsuit because of something of this magnitude and they post a charade.
Appreciate.
wise people get that way by learning. also, it's tremendous to be able to check the waters, which is obviously from other answers murky.

It's definitely a marketing trick. Hawking wouldn't waste his time asking stupid questions on internet when he could be asking the same stupid questions in front of the media and getting paid for it.

Does it matter? Hawking's idea of sending people to the moon to save the human race is ridiculous.

It cannot be a marketing trick because Yahoo would get sued over it by him immidiatly. You cannot write something in another persons name, its illegal as far as I know. The person has to agree for his name to be used.
So even if he did not write it personally someone did it for him and he agreed to it.

I think it is from Dr. Stephen Hawkings, ofcourse through his staffs. as he is in research of the cosmos he may seek some statistical answer to his research.
