As a straight man I don't mean to sound self righteous, but it just really winds me up when I see this

Actually, it's not flattering and it isn't a compliment. Men beeping a car horn at pretty women dates back to the 70's when men would cruise the strip in large cities looking for prostitutes. Beeping the horn was a signal that they were looking for a "date" and the hookers would seperate themselves from the other women on the street and come stand at the corner. Granted, some MEN don't know this and honestly think it's an innocent way to tell a woman she's good-looking, but you never know.. when I get beeped at on the street, I try to ignore it.. if they persist I flip them off :)

Yes, the beeping of a horn is intrusive (it’s an abrasive sound for a start!) but, by and large, I think these guys are simply being inane and unthinking (particularly the ones who limply go "wahey!").

A lot of them just do it as a matter of course and don't even consider that they are actually objectifying women and that this is potentially alienating. Personally, I tend to either simply ignore them or look straight at them with blank disdain. Some of them, however, are more aggressive (i.e seem to use beeping as a way of asserting presence and implying they own the streets). If it seems that way (eg they're gesturing at me), I tend to respond with a rude gesture of my own.

Having said that, there are probably men out there who'd love to get beeped at by women. It just goes to show that the polarity within this issue is actually unfair on both sexes (in different ways).

The man's car "beeps" because he too shallow and base to actually strike up a friendly conversation on his own...he needs a car to do that for him.

Most women will laugh because it's funny to think that there's a man out there thats so stupid...he actually thinks that will work.
It might get him a passenger...just cuz she'd love to ride in that car...but it won't make a relationship... cars get old - stupid guys get tiresome.

i think a guy who beeps at a girl is just trying to say 'hi, im a pervert' cuz especially wen i c a guy doing this 2 a girl in her school uniform 4 example, i feel so tempted 2 follow him n then scratch his car up. thers absolutely no need 4 it. a guy did it 2 me n my friend as we were walkin thru the park the other day, sayin 'giv me a smile laydayz' n i just thought w*nker.

I think they better keep their eye on the road or they'll end up wrecking their car. One time some dude was driving down the street honking and waving at some girls and not paying any attention to what was in front of him. He tailed ended another car and the girls busted up laughing.

Why do women in cars beep at me? I get somewhat confused.

I think of it as a compliment when somebody in a car honks. But I'd rather date somebody who doesn't honk and gives the attention only to one special lady. When my husband and I were dating, years ago, a bunch of guys in a truck honked at me. When I turned to look, my husband was in the truck. He told the guys, "That's my girlfriend," and they stopped honking. They honk at any skirt. Honking is fun for the single. Flirting is fun! But not for somebody who's looking to be attached.

I ignore it, and carry on walking, I think it is rude, but deep down I actually feel flattered. Usually it is truck/lorry drivers, when there are about three of them in the truck/lorry, if there is only one, they don't have the bottle to do it.
