Ive asked a couple of questions about the safety on here already and the answers are good, but I hear all these scary things but everyone is telling me to still go. What will make my trip to Peru (Lima area) worth the dangers? Ive never been outside the country, will it still be a good trip for me to start with? What should I avoid seeing and what is a must see? Should I eat at the restaurants, or cook my own food the entire time? THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

I went to Peru in 2003 including Lima. It was awesome. The restaurant food is great!

Don't drink the water from the faucet (bottled water is sold everywhere) and don't go into bad neighborhoods. You can tell a slum from suburb by amount of trash on the street and quality of housing. Use the same amount of caution you would in New York or LA. Don't flash your cash and keep your belongings near by.

The people are super friendly and many speak English. If you are unsure of something ASK the locals.

When my girlfriend and I started to wonder to the wrong part of the beach a local surfer stopped us and told us it was a bad idea. Use your best judgement. If it looks shady, try something else. There is plenty of other stuff to do.

Mcdonalds and Burger King will make you feel right at home until you are over your initial fear. Better yet ask the people what they recommend, you'll be glad you did.

i would thing macchu pinchu is a must. the remains of this ancient incan civilization was abandoned by its people to prevent its destruction by "civilized" europeans who destroyed their sacred artifacts, murdered their people, and pillaged their treasures, using religion as an excuse. this prime landmark of the world is a testament to the highly evolved incan civilization and their progress in building and astronomy, among other disciplines. have a good trip !
