If you read his interviews, you will find that John Lennon was a total pr*ck and was very insecure about his musical abilities. He was also unbelievably pretensious (ex. "Revolution 9", the "Two Virgins" album with Yoko.) The only reason Lennon is held in such high esteem these days is because of his untimely assassination.
Although Paul wasn't any great shakes himself, his music gladdens the heart and pleases the soul. His compositions are far more musically complex than Lennon's ever were, and were a helluva lot more positive. McCartney gets my vote.
