Cable, satellite.

Some ISPs offer cards instead of discs or printed instructions for accessing their services. The card (looks like a credit card or phone card) has a unique username and password on it to access a dialup service. The card itself doesn't do anything; you just get your username and password off it and it will have a toll-free number on it to call if you have problems getting connected. You'll still need a phone line.

To get internet without a phone line, there's only cable and satellite. DSL requires a phone line, but it allows you to access the internet AND use the phone at the same time by "splitting" the signals in the phone line. This is a good option for people who have only one phone line for both phone and internet and who don't yet have other options in their area.

It sounds like you can't connect because the modem is somehow already being used.

Check that you do not have some programme running in the background that is using your modem. An autodialler, or a bot, or some trojan viruses and worms tend to do this.

Try switching off the pc and removing the modem. Switch the pc back on and let it run, see if there's any error messages that automatically come up about not being able to find the modem. Find out what programme is causing this and disable/uninstall it if it isn't needed. Uninstall the modem on your Control Panel. Reboot the pc and see if anymore messages come up. Switch the pc off again and reconnect the modem. Reinstall the software if required and you should be ok.

you could wait a year and wait for BT to update its fibre tpons lines so that tehy are broadband capable or if you live too far from an exchange either move closer, put up with dial-up or get sattelite

I have wireless broadband. It means no phone connection and it works a treat! Cost me 20 euro a month so cheaper than previous phone connection. Check out wireless broadband on the net and find out if anyone is in your area. Works for me!

Good luck

I didn't get whether the problem is arising from unavailability of connectivity (no phone service in the area) or lacking a hardware (a modem, ISDN etc. ..).
If it is lack or conflict of hardware, you may follow the advice in one of the previous answers.
If no phone service, you may try satellite Internet (VSat or similar). I asked a question in Yahoo Answers and got some answers I refer you to:
